Weekly Market Summary

MicroStrategy, an enterprise software development business, stated on Tuesday that its subsidiary MacroStrategy purchased 4,197 Bitcoin (BTC) ($190.5 million) between February 15 and Tuesday in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

MicroStrategy purchased each coin for a weighted average price of $45,714, nearly the same as the digital asset’s price at the time of publishing. As an upshot, MicroStrategy and subsidiaries now own a total of 129,218 BTC, valued at $3.97 billion and $30,700 per BTC on average.

On Tuesday the Treasury Department announced that it had collaborated with the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, and Homeland Security Investigations to sanction Garantex, a Russian darknet marketplace. The US government’s action happened on the same day that the German Federal Criminal Police revealed that it had taken down Hydra’s servers in Germany and confiscated more than $25 million in BTC linked to the marketplace.

Other notable events include:

Ja Rule is selling fyre art

Rapper Ja Rule has auctioned an NFT of a painting from the controversial Fyre Festival. On the Flipkick NFT auction site, the NFT with the Fyre festival’s emblem and the word fyre across it sold for $122,000.

The buyer will take delivery of not only the NFT but also the physical piece of art. On Flipkick, Ja Rule has four more NFTs of Fyre festival artwork up for sale, one of which starts at $600,000.

Billy McFarland, a producer, wanted to organize a party on a tropical island in 2017. So he enlisted the help of several celebrities and musicians, including Ja Rule, to create promotional content. The event, however, did not live up to the hype — or even satisfy basic pledges like providing proper facilities — and McFarland was required to pay millions in fines for scamming ticket buyers.

Steven Soderbergh contributes $300,000 to a crypto-powered film fund

Steven Soderbergh, director of “Ocean’s Eleven,” has partnered with Decentralized Pictures, a crypto-powered film fund, to provide a $300,000 grant on the blockchain film finance platform.

As with a lot of things I’ve done, it’s kind of an experiment,” Soderbergh adding that he’s curious to see if blockchain film financing “really does work” and that he wants to “get up in the grill of this blockchain approach or structure to see if it’s going to do what it’s supposed to do.
