Weekly Market Summary

Yesterday would have been the 66th birthday of Hal Finney, a computer scientist, and the world’s first publicly acknowledged Bitcoiner.

Finney was also the first person to publicly run Bitcoin (BTC), with a memorable tweet that frequently resurfaces in the annals of crypto Twitter history.

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, updated his Twitter profile pic to a collage of Bored Apes from BAYC.

Musk didn’t choose just any Bored Apes image; he “borrowed” a promotional piece from Sotheby’s auction of 101 Bored Ape NFTs from September 2021. Sotheby’s VP, Michael Bouhanna, requested in a tweet to Musk to either delete or give credit to the image.

Musk has a lengthy history of interacting with the crypto Twitter community, including mocking and posting memes that have boosted the price of Dogecoin in the past. He even tweeted a typical criticism from NFT detractors in this case, adding, “I dunno … seems kinda fungible.”

The regulatory approach to DeFi should be reconsidered

Analysts from the European Commission demonstrated a surprising knowledge of how decentralized finance (DeFi) works, defining it as something distinct from the old financial system and realizing that it would necessitate a shift in regulatory thinking.

Patrick Hansen, a long-time specialist on European regulation and crypto venture adviser at Presight Capital, revealed some key insights from the EU Commission’s “European Financial Stability and Integration Review 2022” on Monday, May 2. The writers of the T report, dated April 7, include a 12-page chapter on DeFi in which they present a reasonable approach to the problem.

The Kraken NFT marketplace has opened a beta waitlist

More than four months after CEO Jesse Powell launched the idea, crypto exchange Kraken has established a waitlist for its non-fungible token, or NFT, marketplace in beta.

Kraken announced Tuesday that the queue for its marketplace is open. Of course, this means NFT sales, but what sets them apart is the ability to utilize tokens for collateral on loans. In addition, for any NFT held on Kraken, users can trade with zero gas. The only time gas fees apply is when tokens leave the platform. Finally, Kraken includes a “rarity score” based on the “traits and attributes that make every NFT unique.” Creators get rewarded with a portion of the secondary market sales from their NFTs.

Terra claims that its usage of fiat-pegged stablecoins distinguishes it from the competition by combining the borderless benefits of cryptocurrencies with the day-to-day price stability of fiat currency. It maintains its one-to-one peg thanks to an algorithm that adjusts stablecoin supply in response to demand. It motivates LUNA holders to trade LUNA and stablecoins at lucrative exchange rates as needed to extend or reduce the stablecoin supply to meet demand.
