Weekly Market Summary

thereum, the world’s second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has smashed past $4,000. On Monday, May, 10, the price rallied to $3,000. The next day it struck $3,500, and it’s been rising ever since. With a market cap of around $460 billion, Ethereum still plays second fiddle to Bitcoin. 

The Ethereum blockchain enables the creation of a world of decentralized financial services through its pioneering use of smart contracts—self-enforcing bits of computer code. Thanks to Ethereum’s smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi) services have exploded over the past year. 

During his opening monologue on the comedy show Saturday Night Live, Maye Musk jokingly told her son she hoped she wouldn’t be receiving any Dogecoin (DOGE) as part of her Mother’s Day gift that weekend. 

Referring to his character as the “Dogefather,” Musk said prices had been soaring for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and DOGE, but was jokingly unable to provide an answer to SNL cast member Michael Che’s question on “What is Dogecoin?”. 

After the opening monologue, the price of DOGE fell from $0.69 to under $0.50 for the first time since it had surpassed a half dollar in early May.

Cooperation

Deutsche Börse, a German marketplace operator, is partnering with Commerzbank to develop blockchain-based marketplaces for assets like art and real estate.

It’s part of the companies’ investment in a fintech firm called 360X. Deutsche Börse and Commerzbank plan to sell their first tokenized assets through the firm later this year.

Coinbase

Coinbase’s US customers can now buy crypto on the exchange via debit cards and bank accounts linked to PayPal.

Once a user chooses the relevant cryptocurrency they want to purchase, they would need to tap on the “add payment option” within the Coinbase app and select PayPal. After the user logs in to PayPal, they can add a debit card or bank account linked to their PayPal account. At that point, the user will be able to make a purchase of up to $25,000 every day using their PayPal account.
