The idea of Symbol was born in 2016 and has been originally called Catapult. As the second iteration of NEM, the purpose of Symbol is to connect both businesses and individuals. Interoperability stands central, connecting Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any other blockchain, even private ones.

Compared to NEM, Symbol has increased safety. Symbol enables any programming language to be integrated. It enables cross-chain swaps. And finally, the API connectivity is made even better, which enables programmers to plug and play any system into the Symbol blockchain.

XEM + XYM Airdrop

To seed the Symbol network and promote the XYM currency, NEM has announced an airdrop.

If you buy XEM or hold XEM and opt-in to the snapshot, you will receive the same amount of XYM as your XEM wallet. Find all the details on their website.

The snapshot of the airdrop will happen simultaneously with the launch of the Symbol blockchain, somewhere in February. An exact date has not yet been announced.
